Gourd (Hulu) Jadeite

The gourd, hulu (葫芦), is one of the best-loved jade motifs, and its meaning comes from a play on words: hulu sounds like fu lu (福禄), fortune and prosperity. Its two joined chambers are read as family harmony and as gathering good things and keeping them, which is why a gourd is a common gift for elders as a wish for good health. We share these meanings as cultural tradition, not as claims about the stone. The shape is simple, so a gourd shows off the jadeite itself: the colour, the translucency and how the two rounded chambers catch light. Every gourd here is natural, untreated Grade A.
