Icy Jadeite

Icy jadeite, bing zhong (冰种), is judged on water rather than colour: a near-colourless, highly translucent stone that reads like clear ice. Light passes through the body of the piece, so an icy bangle seems to hold light, and any colour in it, a wisp of green or lavender, floats rather than sits on the surface. Look closely and most icy stones carry fine cotton, soft white clouds suspended inside. That is not a flaw. It is one of the clearest signs the stone is natural, because treated jadeite is bleached and filled precisely to remove it. Icy material is among the most collected jadeite, and every piece here is untreated Grade A.

Frequently asked about

What does icy mean in jadeite?
Icy describes transparency, not colour: a near-colourless stone that light passes through, like clear ice. It is judged on clarity and water, and often carries floating colour or soft cotton inside.
Is the cotton in an icy piece a defect?
No. Cotton is a natural inclusion and one of the signs a stone has not been bleached and resin-filled. Heavy cotton reduces transparency, so we describe how much each piece carries.
